DTI pushes for fair and responsible AI on World Consumer Rights Day
Philippines , 23 March 2024
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) joined the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on 15 March and actively championed the theme, “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.”
The DTI heeds the call of global consumer advocates and international organizations to champion fairness, demand accountability, and pave an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-ready future that enables smart and empowered consumers.
This year’s theme focused on AI’s potential in shaping consumer experiences. From personalized recommendations to automated decision-making, AI influences pricing, content moderation, and consumer-business interactions.
As part of the celebration, the DTI hosted a forum to dissect consumer issues on the use of AI. The discussions explored topics such as automated decision-making, developer accountability, and the need for risk-based and use-case regulation of AI.
Representatives from various government agencies and industry associations led the presentations, including the DTI Bureau of Industry Planning and Innovation, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the National Privacy Commission, and the Analytics & Artificial Intelligence Association of the Philippines.
The forum also recognized the Bulacan Consumer Affairs Council Inc. as the second National Consumer Organization and the Robinsons Supermarket Corporation as the DTI’s newest partner in its Consumer Care Advocacy Initiative Phase II.
Another part of the WCRD celebration is the interactive exhibit, where consumers gained firsthand experience with AI products and services. They had the opportunity to ask questions about the use of these products and the risks involved.
GreatnessLab, Cawil.AI, Tiktok, and Internet of Things Philippines Inc. were also present during the exhibit to demonstrate the potential of innovative AI products such as facial recognition, content creation, and learning management systems.
“This year’s World Consumer Rights Day celebration highlights the importance of ensuring fairness and transparency in these processes. It raises conversations and awareness on responsible AI that protects consumer rights, and fosters trust in the digital age,” Secretary Pascual said.
“AI is a shared responsibility. Let us collectively work towards a future where AI is harnessed responsibly to safeguard consumer rights and promote fair trade practices,” he added.
