ASEAN Releases Campaign Materials on Redress and Misleading Advertisements
Philippines , 08 September 2021
As a member of the ASEAN Committee on Consumer Protection (ACCP), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) launched the regional information campaign on Consumer Redress and Misleading Advertisements along with other ASEAN Member States (AMS).
Earlier this year, the ASEAN Online Shopping infographics and video were released across all AMS to provide helpful tips to the consumers when doing online transactions and to promote good business practices in ASEAN. Aside from online shopping, the ASEAN has produced infographics and video materials that highlight the importance of asserting consumers’ right to redress and information and knowing the proper venues when filing a complaint.
The ACCP aims to strengthen the awareness of the consumers on their rights and responsibilities and likewise to further consumer protection by ensuring that policies for dispute resolution are in place. Last October, the DTI issued Department Administrative Order No. 20-05 or the “Development of a Philippine Online Dispute Resolution System (PODRS)” which prompts the creation of a national portal that will provide an online redress mechanism to the public.
“The DTI enjoins the general public to always practice your rights and responsibilities whether dealing with an online or offline store or establishment. Further, the public is advised to be wary of misleading advertisements and to double-check the provided product information before making a purchase,” says DTI Consumer Protection Group Undersecretary Ruth B. Castelo.
